- The duo is also stepping away from their joint podcast.

- In a statement, Bird and Rapinoe shared that this wasn't an "easy decision."

Sue Bird and Megan Rapinoe are going their separate ways — in love and in podcasting.

The four-time WNBA champion and the former NWSL star announced Friday that they're breaking up after nearly a decade together.

"There really is no smooth or easy way to share this news," Bird and Rapinoe said in a joint statement posted to Instagram. "After a lot of thought, we've made the decision to separate as a couple."

They added, "This hasn't been an easy decision, but it's one we've made together, with so much love, respect, and care for each other. We've shared a whole life over the last decade, through big moments and in quiet ones, and that is something we'll always carry with us."

The duo's relationship began after they met at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Brazil, where they were both competing for the United States. (Bird won gold in basketball, while Rapinoe and the women's soccer team didn't medal.)

"I'm gay. Megan's my girlfriend…These aren't secrets to people who know me," Bird announced to *OUT magazine* in 2017. "I don't feel like I've not lived my life. I think people have this assumption that if you're not talking about it, you must be hiding it, like it's this secret. That was never the case for me."

They became engaged in 2020, and began podcasting together with *A Touch More* in 2024. In their statement, the ex-couple revealed that they will no longer be collaborating on the podcast. Expressing appreciation for their fans, they said, "While this chapter of doing the podcast together is ending, what we've built with you isn't."
