The Perfect Everyday Tote Does in Fact Exist

There are certain things about being in my 30s that are exceptionally wonderful. One of them is knowing exactly what I like and why I like it. For example, I know I love a bucket bag. The slightly rounded shape and the structure are a great complement to each other, and I find that’s the bag type I reach for most particularly in spring and summer. I’ve known this for at least a decade, though, ever since I made one of my first big purchases for myself after college: a black patent leather Mansur Gavriel bucket bag that I still own and wear regularly going on a decade later. Another preference I have developed over the years is that I prefer a vertical tote bag, better still if it has short handles because I seldom ever wear a tote on my shoulder. I am very vain and hate how most totes look cumbersome as you lumber on looking lumpy on a commute. Glamorous it is not.

Turns out though, my old faithful Mansur Gavriel actually does have an option that allows for hands free carrying, and one that is unobtrusive in how it sits next to the body. Enter the Everyday Cabas. Simple in silhouette, but brilliant in the details. The single strap is elongated but comfortable on the shoulder and the tension while wearing it enhances, as opposed to warps, the easy relaxed shape of the vertical tote. It is spacious enough to carry my work laptop, my agenda book, plus smaller notebooks with ease, and it even has an interior sleeve. There’s a magnetic closure to make it feel extra secure, but everything is also within easy reach. And the beautiful buffed leather in a perfect neutral green, soft and supple with a velvety matte finish. The kind that you are certain will become even more gorgeous as time goes on. It’s slouchy and unstructured, but every last element is intentionally thought out.
In other words, it’s functional and wearable beyond measure and perhaps even better: it’s not one of those pieces that will date. I can say with confidence I’ll have it in my possession for a comparable time to its older sibling. I love it so much, in fact, that I am willing to make an exception to my policy of no tote bags worn on shoulders. There’s nothing better than an accessory that makes you change your own rules.
